From NY to Iraq: Medical Equipment & Medications Donated to Iraqi Refugees
Bethpage, NY – Thanksgiving is a time to help others through the gift of time, donations or goods. Catholic Health Services (CHS) entities follow this philosophy year round. One example, St. Joseph Hospital (SJH), a member of CHS, and Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) partnered with Road of Success (ROS), a non-profit Christian organization helping to advance human rights in the Middle East, to help deliver beds, stretchers and medical supplies to the Dahuk Health Department’s emergency center in Kurdistan, Iraq.
Kurdistan has become the host of Yazidi and Christian refugees who were displaced from their homes because of the conflict, violence and area occupation by ISIS. More than 500,000 people were forced leave their home base, making it one of the largest population displacements in the world.
ROS became SJH’s and CMMB’s representative on the ground in Iraq, ensuring the donations of 14 stretchers, 11 hospital beds, 15 mattresses and a variety of lifesaving medications reached the refugees in need.
“Feedback from the Iraqi Department of Health has been overwhelmingly positive,” SJH’s Vice President of Patient Safety & Clinical Program Development Ihab Ibrahim. “They were very grateful for our efforts and assured us it will make a critical impact on the medical care they are able to provide to the refugees. I’m looking forward to working with Catholic Medical Mission Board and Roads of Success in 2019, as we are planning to continue our medical relief efforts.”
